Ever wondered why we're all a bit obsessed with tea towels?
Turns out they've got quite the history.
The name comes from tea service - lining trays, draping over teapots, drying fine china. Linen was the material of choice: soft, lint-free and gentle on delicate glassware.
In Victorian times, a good tea towel was a display of refinement. Women hand-embroidered them with motifs and monograms, bringing them out for afternoon tea to impress guests.
By the early 20th century, tea towels had gone decorative - printed with advertisements, landmarks, calendars and souvenir motifs. Sound familiar?
During the Great Depression, resourceful American homemakers repurposed flour sacks into tea towels. Flour companies began printing designs on the sacks, knowing they'd be used and seen.
In May 1890, Van Gogh painted Daubigny's Garden on a red and white striped tea towel because he had no canvas available. That original tea towel painting is now part of the Van Gogh Museum's collection. The tea towel has always punched above its weight.
