ABOUT THE ART
Spanish artist Ramón Casas i Carbó (1866–1932) created this striking sketched version of his renowned painting "A Decadent Young Woman" for the 1899 cover of "Pèl & Ploma", a magazine he co-founded. The publication’s title reflects the creative partnership behind it: Pèl (hair/brush) representing Casas as the illustrator, and Ploma (feather/quill) representing writer Miquel Utrillo.
The weekly "Pèl & Ploma" became a defining voice of early 20th-century Barcelona, capturing its decadent, intellectual, and bohemian spirit. The magazine prominently featured posters and caricatures by Casas, while its founders also sponsored exhibitions and played a pivotal role in elevating commercial art into a respected artistic discipline in Spain. Today, the publication is widely regarded as a key contributor to the visual identity of the Catalan Art Nouveau movement, known as Modernisme.
This particular image distils Casas’s distinctive style into a refined, expressive composition. The carefree young woman depicted here would go on to become one of the most iconic and recognisable figures in his body of work. Casas himself was not only an artist but an intuitive entrepreneur. Remarkably, he co-founded "Pèl & Ploma" (which ran from 1899 to 1903) while still in his teens and went on to hold exhibitions across Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, and Chicago. In 1897, he was also a principal financier behind "Els Quatre Gats" in Barcelona - a bar inspired by Paris’s famous "Le Chat Noir". The venue became a hub for artistic exchange, hosting social gatherings and rotating exhibitions, including one of the very first solo shows by Pablo Picasso.
The model for "A Decadent Young Woman" was Madeleine de Boisguillaume (1873–1944). Originally a seamstress, she began modelling to supplement her income, first for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and soon for a number of prominent artists, including Casas. She appeared in many of his works, most notably Madeleine (1892), which portrays her seated at a table in the bustling Le Moulin de la Galette in Montmartre — a favourite haunt of artists — her expression capturing a sense of quiet fatigue and melancholy.

All prints include an off-white border on all 4 sides between the image and the edge of the paper - it looks fabulous and mimics a mat board without the expense.
