ABOUT THE ART
First published in the Sunday supplement of the New York Herald Tribune on 2 October 1932, with the caption "Lunch Atop a Skyscraper", this photograph has been called "the most famous picture of a lunch break in New York history" and has become an iconic image of New York City.
The photograph depicts 11 ironworkers sitting on a steel beam 260 meters (850 feet) above the ground on the 69th floor of the near-completed RCA Building (now known as 30 Rockefeller Plaza) at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, New York City, on 20 September 1932. Time magazine included the image in its 2016 list of the 100 most influential images of all time.
The men in the photo were immigrant ironworkers employed at the RCA Building during the construction of Rockefeller Center and they were accustomed to walking along the high girders. The shot was taken as part of a campaign promoting the skyscraper and other photographs taken at the time showed the workers throwing a football and pretending to sleep on the girders. Central Park is visible in the background.
This particular image is often misattributed to Lewis Hine however evidence has emerged indicating it may have been taken by Charles C. Ebbets. It was later found that other photographers had been present at the shoot as well and so the true identity of the photographer is uncertain.
Our collection of old photographs have been restored and enhanced by Retro Print Merchants while retaining their charm and character. As such you may notice attributes such as a slight grain on some images depending on their age and original size and quality.
