Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) painted In The Woods around 1877 in France. Unlike many of the portraits and figure paintings by Renoir, which he carefully composed and refined in his studio, he painted most of his landscapes outdoors and, like this oil on canvas work, his landscapes tended to be more experimental in technique.
Renoir was a French artist and a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau."
The original of In The Woods was purchased by successful Japanese businessman and western art collector of the time, Kojiro Matsukata, only to be sequestered by the French Government in 1944 before finally being returned to Japan, 1959. It now resides with other pieces from the Kojiro Matsukata collection at The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
