Dutch-born Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) painted Cafe Terrace At Night on location in Arles, Provence, in 1888. Van Gogh’s iconic star-filled sky appears for the first time in this painting and was used to great effect not long afterwards in his Starry Night Over The Rhone and Starry Night (both also painted in Arles).
The cafe in the painting is still in existence, now renamed Le Cafe Van Gogh and can be found at 11 Place du Forum, Arles.
The posthumously famous post-impressionist painter created some 2100 works over a decade, most of which date from the last two years of his life.
