Dutch-born Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) painted Starry Night - widely hailed as his magnum opus - in June 1889, just 13 months before he would die from suicide after years of mental illness.
Starry Night was painted from his window at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, southern France, where the artist spent twelve months seeking reprieve from his mental illnesses and his ear amputation. He painted and drew the scene 21 times with this version, which resides permanently in the Museum of modern Art in New York, being by far the most famous.
The posthumously famous post-impressionist painter created some 2100 works over a decade, most of which date from the last two years of his life.
