A restored version of a 1960s vintage travel poster promoting the Caribbean as a travel destination with Pan American.
The airline was commonly known as Pan Am and it was the largest international air carrier and unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States for much of the 20th century. It was the first airline to fly worldwide and pioneered numerous innovations such as jet aircraft, jumbo jets and computerised reservation systems.
During its peak between the late 1950s and early 1970s, Pan Am was world-renowned for its advanced fleet, experienced and highly trained staff, and numerous amenities. In 1970 alone it flew 11 million passengers to 86 countries, with destinations in every continent except Antarctica. By the mid 1970s internal and external challenges, and rising competition after deregulation of the US airline industry in 1978, were taking their toll and finally in 1991 Pan Am declared itself bankrupt, ending what some say was the golden age of air travel.
