ABOUT THE ART

Published in 1876, "Pimpernel" was another William Morris wallpaper and fabric design influenced by oriental flowers and leaves. Only plants coming from the East were chosen or ones that would adapt to eastern style like chrysanthemums, jasmines or willow branches. Morris was particularly keen on acanthus leaves and willow and honeysuckle branches, which he used in many of his creations.

This restored detail from an original piece of printed wallpaper exhibits all the character and patina expected from a physical print well over 100 years old.

Morris (1834-1896) was a renowned British textile designer, poet, artist, novelist, architectural conservationist, printer, translator and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement. He was a major contributor to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production.

Recognised as one of the most significant cultural figures of Victorian Britain, Morris was best known in his lifetime as a poet, although he posthumously became better known for his prolific designs which included huge ranges of wallpaper and fabrics.

An exhibition was held at London's revered Victoria & Albert Museum (the V&A) in 1934, celebrating 100 years since his birth.

    • We print on 230gsm acid-free, wood-free, pH-neutral, archival matte paper using premium archival pigment inks. In a nutshell, the paper is top notch and the high-level digital printing results in superior colour saturation.

    • Our 8 print sizes fit standard metric frames, eg. an A3 print will fit a standard A3 frame.

    • All prints include an off-white printed border that sits between the image and the edge of the paper. We think it looks fabulous and mimics a mat board but without the expense. If you don't want a border please let us know in the Notes section at checkout.
      Off-white printed border widths:
      A3 - 15mm; A2 - 21mm; B2 - 25mm; A1 - 30mm; B1 - 35mm; A0 - 42mm; B0 - 50mm; 2A0 - 59mm.

    • When it comes time to ship we take great care with packaging because we've learned over the years that the freight process can be a little rough!

    • We ship unframed prints internationally excluding our largest 2A0 size.

      • Australian made frames, done the right way. Natural, acid-free materials. Solid wood frames from local, sustainable sources. All backing boards are acid-free and our professional framers avoid MDF or any other type of reconstituted materials.

      • Frames are delivered ready to hang.

      • White oak, natural oak, chocolate oak and black oak timbers available.

      • Frames are 20mm wide and overlap the outer 5mm of the paper on all sides. The depth of the frame is 30mm (ie. the dimension of the frame from the wall to the front of the print).

      • Our professional framers prefer cast acrylic rather than glass: it is lightweight, virtually unbreakable, has greater optical clarity than glass and provides your print with long term protection from harmful UV rays.

      • Our framers will dispatch direct to you in professional packaging.

      • We do not ship framed prints outside Australia.

      • Note: Framed prints should not be hung in strong direct sun due to moisture in the archival pigment inks. If you have a sunny spot we suggest you opt for a stretched canvas or a canvas floating frame instead.
        • We print on Bauhaus bright white canvas 380gsm which has a superior bright white matte surface with perfect colour control and clear texture.

        • The canvas is a cotton/polyester blend. Polyester is added to give greater tension across the image so it doesn’t sag over time.

        • The printed canvas is then stretched onto a pine stretcher bar which is strong, durable and from planted forests so environmentally friendly.

        • All finishing materials used are museum grade and acid free.

        • Our framer will dispatch direct to you in professional packaging.

        • We do not ship stretched canvas prints outside Australia.

          • The top end of our range - la crème de la crème!

          • We print as per Stretched Canvas above and our professional framer then frames in your choice of timber placing a 5mm gap between the canvas and frame.

          • This contemporary, popular style gives the illusion that your canvas picture is “floating” within the frame.

          • Frames are delivered ready to hang.

          • Frames measure 10mm on the face and 45mm on the side.

          • White oak, natural oak, chocolate oak and black oak timbers available.

          • Our framer will dispatch direct to you in professional packaging.

            COMMON QUESTIONS

All our prints are giclée prints which basically means we use a fine art digital printing process that combines pigment based inks with high quality archival paper to achieve a print of superior light fastness and stability.

Our prints are professionally printed and framed here in Australia by local suppliers who are as pedantic about quality as we are.

We ran a successful graphic design company for 25 years so we know a thing or two about image quality. If we can't restore an image to the quality necessary to enlarge it then we won't add it to the collection.

We take great precautions with our packaging in preparation for shipping but if your order arrives damaged or if it is not what you ordered please call me (Penny) on 0407 819 574 within 24 hours of receiving your order so we can have a quick chat about what went wrong.

You can also take photos of the damage that occurred during transit and email me pen@retroprintmerchants.com.au and we will rectify it pronto and send a replacement.

We ask that you handle your item with care once delivered and we're confident it will fill your home with retro colour and style for many, many years!

            WE DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY

            • High-resolution images professionally restored in-house. Many print companies simply download low-quality digital files & offer cheap or always-on-sale prints that are pixelated and sub standard. It's a churn & burn mentality and it's unfortunate in an industry we love.
            • 30 years' experience in graphic design.
            • 3,000 verified reviews, average 4.96 stars.
            • 8 metric sizes from A3 to 2A0 + larger custom-size projects. We offer the largest print sizes available.
            • Museum standard paper & pigment inks.
            • Australian-made hardwood timber frames.
